CRASH

CRASH is an exhibition space located on the Gurzelen site in Biel/Bienne.

It is the latest identity of a project initiated in 2018 by Andrea Marioni under the name espace libre – 4 stagioni, the outdoor extension of the exhibition space espace libre. The project invited artists to engage with the urban laboratory of the Gurzelen site and to confront art in public space, outdoors. The exhibition perimeter was then marked on the ground with white paint: a “white square”.

In 2022, the project separated from espace libre, ran on its own funds without external support, and took the name Balabiott museum chapter BielBienne.

In 2025, acquiring the Viewer, an exhibition module, from Visarte Solothurn made it possible to rethink the space and to develop the hosting of artists. The Crash-test association was founded to provide a new administrative framework, and the exhibition perimeter was renamed CRASH.

CRASH remains rooted in the urban laboratory of the Gurzelen site. Artists can test works outdoors, on the surface of the “white square”, or develop more formal proposals inside the Viewer.

CRASH aims to offer artists a space for experimentation: the chance to take a step aside, to try out new practices, or simply to experiment with other forms of exhibition.

Since 2025, the programme has once again been supported by the City of Biel and Swisslos Canton of Bern.

EN — The texts are written by the CRASH team. Corrections and translations are made with the help of claude.ai, for lack of financial means. The Crash-test association does not currently receive sufficient support to carry out all the tasks of running the website, and this work relies mainly on volunteers. Human resources are therefore protected in order to focus first on exhibition texts and on welcoming artists and the public.
